School Policies

A copy of all school policies are kept in school policy folders at the office and school library. You may view these at school and request copies of individual policies at any time. School policies cover a wide range of relevant areas - some applying just to our school and others as required by the Education Act.

School Rules and procedures

Our school rules help to keep our school a safe place:

  • keep inside the school grounds
  • no climbing trees
  • wear a safety helmet when skateboarding
  • skate on the bottom court
  • get a duty teacher if you have a problem
  • don't hurt people or property
  • get a mediator to help resolve conflicts

Communication

Telephoning the school:
You may call the school during the school day, between 8.30am and 4.30pm. If your child has a change to their after-school arrangements, please call the school to advise of the change. This saves anxiety and ensures that students get home safely.

Absences from school:
By regulation, once enrolled, children are required to attend school unless prevented by illness, special home circumstances or other similar reasons. If your child is going to be away, PLEASE RING to let the school know they will be away and for how long. The school undertakes a daily morning check on the whereabouts of all students. This ensures the safety of students for both parents and the school. The school is required to inform the School Board of unexplained absences or irregular attendance. If unable to phone, please send a note to the school.

Transport to school

Buses:
Basically, there are four runs, contracted by BOWMANS BUSES, that serve our school. KOHUMARU and HIHI runs arrive at 8.10am approximately and BACK RIVER soon after 8.20am. Finally the bulk of our pupils arrive at 8.50am when the start bell goes. In the afternoon the reverse happens. The MANGONUI / TAIPA bus leaves promptly at 2.50pm and pupils wait 30 minutes for KOHUMARU and HIHI runs which leave at 3.20pm.

NB. Some pupils transfer at TAIPA to PARAPARA and FERN FLAT runs. Pupils are not strictly eligible on these runs. However, they may travel on these buses as long as no over-crowding exists. Any bus problems -contact the Taipa Bus Controller at Taipa Area School. Phone 09 406 0159.

Bus rules:
To travel on the bus is a privilege, not a right. Children are expected to behave sensibly, protecting the safety of themselves and others. In the interest of safety, the following bus rules must be observed:

  • Remain seated until bus stops
  • When getting off the bus, stand back from the road and wait until the bus has left before walking on
  • If your child has a change of destination, (or is catching a different bus home), a note to the teacher is expected. This avoids confusion
  • If unsocial or dangerous behaviour occurs, the child in question receives one verbal warning. If further discipline is required, a written warning is received by the parent / caregiver

Repeated offenders could be banned from travelling on buses. Parents / Caregivers would have to make their own arrangements for their child's transport to school.

We have been forced to treat bad bus behaviour very seriously because of the potential danger to all children on our busy roads

Health and safety issues

Health promoting schools:
Mangonui School is a Health Promoting School. This means that we are part of a nation-wide group of schools who are working together with the Government and the Area Health Boards to promote health and safety within their school communities. So far at Mangonui, we have tackled the issues of shade areas, the wearing of sunhats and bathing caps and keeping our grounds litter free. We are also in the process of developing our school grounds further. There will be new issues arising and being dealt with on an annual basis. A Health Promoting Schools Team made up of pupils, B.O.T. members and staff run this initiative.

Bee stings and other allergies:
When we enrol children, we ask parents to note if their children have any allergies or health problems. We ask that parents inform the school and arrange for a sufficient quantity of antidote or a puffer (in the case of an asthmatic) to be kept on the school premises in case the need arises. For safety, please ensure all medicines are clearly named and kept with the teacher, NOT in pupils' bags!!

Public health nurse:
The Public Health Nurse visits our school weekly. If parents have any worries over matters relating to the health of their children they may contact the school and arrangements will be made for the Nurse or another visiting specialist to see the child.

Dental clinic:
The Dental Therapist visits our school once a year to check on all pupils at the Mangonui School Clinic. Should you have any concerns at times when she is not based at Mangonui, please phone Kay or Bianca on 09 406 0160.

Sunhats:
It is the policy of this school that sunhats must be worn during terms 1 and 4. These are our summer terms and students are expected to wear a suitable sunhat outside at all times. Parents are requested to ensure that their child brings a named sunhat to school during these two terms. Students without hats will be directed to play under shade.

Bathing caps:
To help limit the spread of head lice and to help keep the pool filtration plant clean, all pupils must wear a bathing cap when swimming in the school pool.

Tips for parents

Visit the school playgrounds during weekends with your child.

  • Make sure your child's backpack / schoolbag is big enough to fit lunchbox, drink bottle, reading book and swimming gear
  • Naming your child's clothing and gear is useful
  • Encourage your child to be independent in self care skills like dressing (after swimming), washing hands after toileting (how to use the urinal for boys) and knowing their phone number
  • Invite friends around who may be going to the same school or already attend
  • Be aware that at school children are discouraged from sharing food and drinks
  • Expose your child to a wide range of fun, enjoyable, social experiences
  • Feel okay to ask your Early Childhood centre or school any questions or concerns you may have

Complaints

If you have a concern or issue, in the first instance:

  • Make an appointment with the class teacher
  • It is preferred that you make an appointment for an interview to ensure you have the time to air your concern
  • If you are still dissatisfied, please discuss the issue, by appointment, with the senior teacher
  • If you need to take the matter further, please bring it to the attention of the Principal

We do want to hear from you to help sort out your concerns. A copy of the complaints policy is available at the school office.

New Zealand Curriculum – Community Consultation Evening Outcomes

6 August 2009

Earlier in the year I reported to you on the Vision, Principles and Values described in the New Zealand Curriculum. On the evening of July 29, members of the school community worked with Lesley Parton from Team Solutions to revise the Mangonui School vision. We started by individually identifying ten traits that well prepared capable school leavers from Mangonui School should have. Then, in groups, we had to break our ten into five, some respecting of differences was required. Finally as a whole group we had to come up with five traits we all agreed upon. People came from different perspectives and an interesting discussion was held. The outcome is as follows:

  • A good Communicator
    (Community Engagement/ Coherence/ Future Focus)
  • Self Motivated
    (Learning To Learn/ High Expectations)
  • Respects differences
(Inclusion/ Cultural diversity/ Treaty of Waitangi)
  • Open to learning
    (Learning To Learn/ Coherence)
  • (Traits are linked to the New Zealand Curriculum Principles)

The challenge for Mangonui School staff is to consider how we can make these statements come alive in our school. There are a number of strategies already in place that we are doing. But we will be doing some thinking as to how we can make this stronger. As part of this process we will also be asking our school community through surveys to do some thinking around this subject.

Thank you to all the school whanau that came to the community evening. I sincerely believe that together we can continue to strengthen Mangonui School.
Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.

Principles
The principles set out below embody beliefs about what is important and desirable in school curriculum – nationally and locally. They should underpin all school decision making.

High expectations
The curriculum supports and empowers all students to learn and achieve personal excellence, regardless of their individual circumstances.

Treaty of Waitangi
The curriculum acknowledges the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, and the bicultural foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand. All students have the opportunity to acquire knowledge of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga.

Cultural diversity
The curriculum reflects New Zealand’s cultural diversity and values the histories and traditions of all its people.

Inclusion
The curriculum is non-sexist, non-racist, and non-discriminatory; it ensures that students’ identities, languages, abilities and talents are recognised and affirmed and that their learning needs are addressed.

Learning to learn
The curriculum encourages all students to reflect on their own learning processes and to learn how to learn.

Community engagement
The curriculum has meaning for students, connects with their wider lives, and engages the support of their families, whānau and communities.

Coherence
The curriculum offers all students a broad education that makes links within and across learning areas, provides for coherent transitions, and opens up pathways to further learning.

Future focus
The curriculum encourages students to look to the future by exploring such significant future-focused issues as sustainability, citizenship, enterprise, and globalisation.
